The process of taking raw rock slabs to finished cabochons has begun. I love this part of jewelry making – creating works of art from the stones, minerals and gems of mother earth.
I mark the slabs for the finished stone shapes. I find the most interesting areas of the rock faces, then cut them into ovals, squares, free-forms…whatever the stones ask of me.

I’m especially happy with these first two natural stones – a crescent moon with beautiful colors of labradorescence shiller and a rare stone, Brazilian cheetah jasper with the raw rind left intact. An outer rind many times grows through the center or surrounds the interior stone. A bit more shape grinding on the wheels, then on to the polishing. Look for the crescent to become a part of my Moonrise Collection.
